"Remember The Night" (1939) is a Preston Surges film that, sadly, isn't as well known as it should be. This was the first pairing of Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck, who would appear together a few years later in the classic "Double Indemnity."

The plot: Just before Christmas, Lee Leander (Barbara Stanwyck)is caught shoplifting. It is her third offense. She is prosecuted by John "Jack" Sargent (Fred MacMurray). He gets the trial postponed because it is hard to get a conviction at Christmastime. But he feels sorry for her and arranges for her bail. He takes her home to see her mother, whom she has not seen for eight years, and in a chilling scene, Lee's mother rejects her, telling her "good riddance to bad rubbish!" With no place for Lee to go, John decides to take her home to Indiana to stay with his family for Christmas. Surrounded by a loving family, Lee falls in love with Jack. After they return to New York for the trial, John tries to get her aquitted, but Lee decides to confess anyway. At the end of the film, the judge schedules the sentence hearing for the following week. John promises, no matter the outcome, that he will stand by her and that they will be married when she's released from prison.

This video is "the Christmas scene" where John brings Lee home to visit his mother, his aunt, and the hired-hand Willie. Beulah Bondi plays the mother. She is probably best known for her portrayal as Jimmy Stewart's mother, Ma Bailey, in "It's A Wonderful Life." Elizabeth Patterson plays spinster Aunt Emma. Ms. Patterson is probably best known for playing Mrs. Trumball in "I Love Lucy." Character actor Sterling Holloway plays Willie, the hired-hand. Holloway is probably best known for providing the voice for Winnie The Pooh.

Here's the lyrics for the song Sterling Holloway sings in the clip:

"The End Of A Perfect Day"

When you come
to the end of a perfect day
and you sit alone with your thought

While the chimes ring out
with a carol gay
For the joy
that the day has brought

Do you think
what the end of a perfect day
can mean to the tired heart,
When the sun goes down
with a flaming ray
and the dear friends
have to part?
